MS MAPI 5.0 - RTF formating for recipiants

Am using the MAPIMessage control in VB 5.0 to create messages, which is
then editted manually and sent.

The recipient address generated within the program is always defaulting
to the following setting being ON:
"Always send to this recipient in Microsoft Exchange rich-text format"
This can be seen if you double click on the recipient name when editting
the email. The setting is always OFF when typing in an address directly.

The RTF flag is causing an attachment to be added to our outgoing
messages.

I'm currently setting the address using the following sample code:
Form1.MAPIMsg.RecipAddress = "SMTP:te...@test.com"
Is there a setting to turn off RTF?

We are using Outlook 97 client and Exchange 5.0 server.
