I have developed an application in VB6 and as stated in the package and
deployment wizard am trying to install DCOM98 on a windows 95 machine before
running the application setup routine.

The install is on a Windows 95 machine in Spain. The problem seems to be
where the DCOM98 install routine gives a message saying it cannot continue
because some system files are out of date. Clicking OK enables the install
routine to replace the files. It then instructs you to restart the machine
before running DCOM98 install again.

Once the machine has been restarted, running DCOM98 again as instructed
gives the error message 'A newer version of DCOM98 has been installed. To
override, you must uninstall the current version first' The install routine
then ends.

Installation of the VB6 app still does not work however.

I have run DCOM98 on Win95 in other countries and subsequently installed my
VB6 app and have had no problems reported.

Has anyone encountered problems with DCOM98? Can you help in anyway?

Thanks in advance.

Is this for using ADO? I really think you are probably supposed to use the
DCOM95 update for 95. The DCOM95 update is licensed for distribution but the
DCOM98 is not supposed to be distributed with your app (sorry, probably
shouldn't open that can of worms).

We're doing VB development on ADO to SQL server and have fought a long
battle with the DCOM/ADO installation issues.

Yes, you are right. I have since discovered that DCOM95 works OK. The
document I had (created by Microsoft I believe), suggested that DCOM98 was
needed to install apps on Windows95 or 98. I have since read elsewhere that
installing DCOM is not necessary at all for Windows 98 and in fact it is
DCOM95 that you must install for Windows 95?!?

Thanks
