In the good old days, you cound transfer the settings [not the data] of
Office 2003 from one PC to another and get a file under 2MB. Now that the
wizard doesn't exist, we're forced [?] to use FSTW or USMT.

So I wanted to duplicate my desktop settings [not files] to my netbook for
office 2007. So I tried FSTW and I ended up with a [compressed] 150MB file.
why so big? I excluded My Docs [which is where I keep just about everything]
and data.

I was thinking of trying USMT, but you really need to know how XML works, etc.

Is there somewhere, where I can get ahold of any pre-made templates?

If you use USMT all you need to run is this command -

Scanstate <store> /i:migapp.xml /v:13 /c

By default when running usmt you get all User profiles and system settings -
you need to add rules for application settings (migapp.xml) and data - if you
do not use any other xml files you will not get any user data - now the file
could still be larger than expected - PST files will move plus some other
templates ... with the migapp rules

oh - to restore

Loadstate <store> /i:migapp.xml /v:13 /c
