Oh that's not fair, I just bought 2004 and 2005 is only a few days away from
being released. :-(

but this is about the US version. However basics ought to be the same.

NB don't go and buy a US version if you are currently using a UK one - they
are NOT compatible.

Bob,
Why did you post this - we both know that there are huge fundamental
differences between the [excellent] US version and the [substandard]
UK version

Just read some of your previous posts

Really, why is the UK version substandard? What are us Brits missing out on
from the US version?

He probably posted it because we still see quite a number of postings from
people who have got the US trial. GOt all of their data in it and then go
out and buy the US one.

Well, if you buy the US one you'd get a load of Tax stuff (Schedule D etc).
You'll also get advertising and even greater integration into MSN Money.
There is also the 401(k) manager. Because a large number of the banks
integrate with the product too, more of that stuff is available.

There are 4 versions in the US. I don't think we are missing stuff that we
can use, because it would have been a concious effort to take out bits that
don't apply to us.

Of course I should have said 'got all of their data in it and then go and
buy the UK one'. I.e., an incompatible one. Regular readers of the group
will almost certainly be aware of this.

I have seen that there ARE going to be new versions of Money for the UK and
will be released on 10th Sept. There are adverts in this month's Future
magazine that came with MCV yesterday.

I should hope there is an upgrade option.

If by "upgrade" option you mean a reduced price if you already have a
previous version of Money, then I am afraid you are going to be
disappointed. MS have never done that for Money. On occasion in the past
there has been a moneyback mailin voucher inside the box but even that
hasn't happened for the last couple of versions. Also sometimes retailers
have done their own moneyback but again that hasn't happened for a while.

There were upgrades available in the past. I went from 2000 Financial
Suite to 2001 Financial Suite using an upgrade edition so they used to
do them.

It would be nice if Microsoft offered an upgrade for current money
users simply because the lifetime of the product is so short. Its one
of the very few products that microsoft release every year. I think
offering an upgrade from the previous edition only is fine as this
would keep the money coming in rather than letting people with ancient
versions get a brand new copy cheaply.

The flip side of this though is that when i had Money 2000 i needed to
get the Financial Edition to get all the planners and this was about
£40-50 so a £20 upgrade seemed very reasonable. Now that all of that
has been moved to the Standard edition which only costs £25 it isnt
such a saving.

Still at £10 upgrade would be nice.

Cheers

Simon

Yeah, but I bet there wouldn't be any profit for anyone at that price.
Retailer, transport, development issues would easily cost more, and then
maintaining the feed with no revenue doesn't make great business sense
either. I don't think £25 is too bad myself - you don't have to upgrade each
year, so perhaps by doing so every two, you're getting it for about the
figure you quote of a tenner.

When there were three products in the line-up, the case for an upgrade
version was more compelling - especially if you had bought the standard or
FS and wanted the business edition. Without the latter, I doubt they would
do an upgrade as it's probably too much hassle

I asked my retailer to refund me for 2004 and they say no. So I asked
Microsoft and they have said that they will send me a free copy of 2005, all
I need to do is provide proof of purchase (which is simple). So maybe
people who want to 'upgrade' might be best to ask MS.

Well done! However I think that MS have a time limit so if you bought M2004,
say, 10 months ago they might say tough!!

So as a potential Money Newbie itching to get my banking in order do I need
to wait for the offical launch of the 2005 product or be satisfied with the
2004 version?

I guess this get back to the original question asked in the subject of this
thread: When is the release date of Money 2005?

Can I use the trial one in the meantime to capture my accounts and get
started?

The trial is now available, the product is released (see
http://money.mvps.org/amazon.aspx for links to Amazon). The only thing not
finished is the page on the UK Money site.
