I got the following message when I tried to search for updates. I went
through the forum and found several 'fixes', none of which worked. I cannot
change permissions on certain files, not even when I'm in save mode as an
administrator. (Try, for example, to add anything to the Icon folder in
Windows Media Player) Windows Vista Home Premium(?) is so protected that it
won't update or allow additions of any sort that wasn't anticipated by the
programmers. This means that some gadgets and/or add-ons simply don't work,
even if they were supposedly designed for Vista. As a programmer I
understand the problem, but I suspect that there is no solution. When you
install the active X controls to update other things from Microsoft, you
better not be using Vista. Vista won't allow you to run and search the
system, because even administrators don't have that kind of control over
parent-child permissions or inherited permissions. Sad, but true. If anyone
knows a work around, I'd like to hear it, because I really like automatic
updates, in spite of the bandwidth usage and lack of control they represent.

Yep,I'd like to know as well. What I REALLY hate is that all these so claled
fixes seem to talk about what to do when running the XP OS. Those of us who
are STUCK with Vista just don't seem to get a break do we?

Not sure why I'm taking the time to reply because MS is really not interested
in helping anyone after they have purchased their OS or a computer running
it. I have tried all the so called fixes and work arounds and none work with
Vista

This is a useless answer. I am already signed in as an adminastrator, if I
was not I would not have looked for rely. I don't care about what vista
can't do I want the problem of having updates done. If vista has an issue
with active x controll then microsoft should deeal with that. There is gardly
a web site that doesn't ask for you to do downloads or active x asuch as
flash etc.

I get exactly the same message, and I cannot break free of this entanglement
to get the problem solved no matter what I try to do. I think this stinks!
Furthermore, I signed on for the CEIP [Customer Experience Improvement
Program], but the files are just collecting like crazy and not being sent in
to Microsoft, I can tell! What do I have to do, burn the files to a CD and
snail mail them in to Microsoft to see that they get them? I have a seething,
burning hatred for Vista myself now and wonder about a way to dump it and
install XP back onto my HD...I also wonder why they invented their stupid
system to slow me down whenever I command it to do anything because it
darkens the screen, throws up another window asking me if I started this to
click continue. How secure is that, really? If a hacker got into my system,
he'd still be able to click continue as well, so why slow me down by putting
crud like that into an OS to slow anyone down to keep them from being
productive? That's malarky!

Hi guys,
just to be sure!
Does anyone of you have contacted MS directly?
I do have the same problem. I am so tired of it.
And I will contact them personally. But if anybody had contacted them
before, I'd like to hear about it.

greetings!

You're just going to love this, but I got Windows 7 and it's STILL doing the
same thing, so don't think upgrading is going to help. Save your money. I
wish I had.

I tried all of the suggestions out there over and over. Nothing worked until
I found:

http://www.keyongtech.com/3812385-cant-update-error-0x8ddd0002#4

I performed all of the steps suggested and then tried windows update. It
finally works now.

Excerpt from site posted above:

"Posted by another user - MS solution:-

Step 1: Reset Internet Explorer settings.
==========
1. Click Start, Run, type: inetcpl.cpl and press Enter.
2. Select the General tab, and in the Temporary Internet files window, click
Delete Cookies, and click OK.
3. In the same tab click Delete Files, check the "Delete all offline contents"
box and click OK.

4. Click on the "Security" tab. Click on each zone and click the button
"Default
Level".
5. Click the Advanced tab, and click "Restore Defaults".
6. Under the Advanced tab, uncheck Enable third-party browser extensions
(requires restarting).
7. Click to select the Use HTTP 1.1 and the Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy
connections check boxes.

Step 2: Check the local Windows Update services.
===============
This issue can occur if three services have not been configured correctly.
Please refer to the following steps to check them:

1. Click Start->Run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open
box and click OK.
2. Double click the service "Automatic Updates".
3. Click on the Log On tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is
selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is
unchecked.

4. Check if this service has been enabled on the listed Hardware Profile. If
not, please click the Enable button to enable it.
5. Click on the tab "General "; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic".
Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the
service.
6. Repeat the above steps with the other two services:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) Event log

Note: The Startup Type of BITS can be "Automatic" or "Manual"; the Event log
service is enabled on all of the hardware profiles, which does not have an
option to enable or disable on certain hardware profile.

Step 3: Rename the temporary folder of Windows Update.
===============
This behavior may occur if the temporary folder of Windows Update has been
corrupted. We can refer to the following steps to rename this folder. Please
be assured the folder will be created again when we visit the Windows Update
site again.

1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command
in the opened window.

net stop WuAuServ

2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.
3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to SDold.
4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following
command
in the opened window.

net start WuAuServ

Step 4: Re-register the Windows Update components.
=================
1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter.
2. Run the following commands:

Regsvr32 msxml3.dll
Regsvr32 wuapi.dll
Regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
Regsvr32 wucltui.dll
Regsvr32 wups.dll
Regsvr32 wuweb.dll
Regsvr32 qmgr.dll
Regsvr32 qmgrprxy.dll
Regsvr32 jscript.dll

We will receive "succeeded" message if a component is registered successfully.

Step 5: Disable firewalls or other Internet browser programs that can affect
the
Internet connection.
==================
The following programs can affect the connection to the Windows Update site
and
I suggest you remove or disable them:

TweakMASTER DNS
Web Accelerator
Download Accelerator
GetRight
Browser Blaster

Sygate Personal Firewall
Norton Internet Security
Freedom Firewall
Zone Alarm Firewall

If you have any other similar programs such as a pop-up blocker, please also
temporarily remove or disable it to test the issue. If this issue appears to
be related to a firewall program, I also recommended that you contact the
firewall manufacturer to obtain the information to configure the firewa ll
options to allow the access to the Windows Update site.

Step 6: Reset the proxy list (and bypass list).
==================
This issue can occur if the proxy has not been configured correctly. Let's
first
reset the proxy list.

1. Open Internet Explorer. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
2. Click the Connections tab, click LAN Settings, and then click Advanced.
3. Delete any entry in the Exceptions section.
4. Quit Internet Explorer.
5. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
6. Type the following commands. Press ENTER after each command.

proxycfg -d
proxycfg -u
net stop wuauserv
net start wuauserv

Note: If you use a router to access the Internet, please remove the router and
connect the computer to the Internet directly. This issue can be likely caused
by incorrect router configurations."
End of exerpt.
