Hi All,

Does any know if I purchase the streets and trips with the GPS from
microsoft, if I can then use that GPS for other applications or is the
microsoft GPS only good for streets & trips?

Thanks

Hi Lee,

Yes, the included GPS receiver uses the NMEA standard and thus it will be
compatible with a very wide range of application software. The Microsoft
software/hardware is a good value for the money.

However, if you don't mind spending more money to get the very best there is
on the market today, you may consider purchasing one of the new GPS
receivers that just recently became available in stores. They contain a very
powerful SiRFstarIII chip, and these receivers perform very well even in
environments where other receivers (which were considered the best not that
long ago) struggle and perform very badly.

Can you recommend a specific model with the new chip? We're looking for
something that does not have a display since our own application will be
taking care of all the mapping and interface.

Do you know off hand if the MS GPS is WAAS enabled?

Thanks

Lee,

Regarding the WAAS question, I'm not sure because I have heard yes and no
answers to that. But it is a complete non issue to me as WAAS is irrelevant
for driving purposes.

Today I'd recommend to look at Globalsat BT-338. If you have time for
reading, here is a link to a very long thread with over 350 replays and read
almost 50,000 times now ;-)

Once someone uses this GPS receiver, I don't think they will want to go back
to what they used before ;-) I know I don't ;-)

Thanks for the info. The WAAS is important to us as we're logging positions
of signs on roads and the 3 meter accuracy is what we're looking for, but
this would likely work well for development purposes.

Thanks

Take a look here for a GPS with the latest technology:
http://library.delorme.com/hardware/lt20.htm

This item is expected to soon be available.

Here is one of the features listed on the box in which S&T 2005 with GPS
locator is sold,:
"Wide area augmentation system (WAAS) capability pinpoint your location
within meter."

The quote below should read "within 3 meters". Not that I really trust this
figure. I some locations the WAAS signal is weak. For example at my home
location, I get a locaton drift in the order of +/- 15 meters.

Craig,

At this moment there are only two GPS receivers which contain the new
SiRFstarIII chip.

GPSlim236 by Holux and BT-338 by GlobalSat. A lot has been written by users
about both. Here I'm including links to two very long discussion threads:

GPSlim236: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21511

BT-338: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=19000

I got mine from www.semsons.com
