What's the difference between SQL Server 2005 & SQL Server Express?
Out of the two, which is newer version?

I have Management Studio Express installed in my WinXP (SP2) machine.
Does that mean I have SQL Server Express installed in my machine?

I downloaded Management Studio Express from the Microsoft website. Can
SQL Server 2005 be downloaded similarly? If yes, kindly provide the
URL from which SQL Server 2005 can be downloaded.

Express is one of the editions of SQL Server. It isn't a separate product or
version. The following link explains the different editions:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/prodinfo/features/compare-features.mspx

Express will quite happily run alongside other editions on the same machine.

You can download a *time-limited* trial of the other editions. Or you can
download it from MSDN if you are a subscriber. Or you can purchase the full
product from a vendor. Express is the only edition that is "free" but there
is also Developer Edition that costs around $50 provided it is for dev and
test only.

Management Studio Express is a separate download and it can't be installed
alongside Management Studio from one of the other editions. You would have
to uninstall Management Studio Express first.

So SQL Server 2005 has 4 editions - Express, Workgroup, Standard &
Enterprise. The Enterprise edition, in turn, has 2 editions -
Developer & Evaluation. Out of these editions, only Express is free.
Have I got this right?

But then what's the difference between Management Studio Express &
Management Studio?

Thanks,

Ron

I've never used SSMS express but I'm assuming it's a stripped down version
of the enterprise SSMS version
