I have one user that is unable to connect via 2000 Query Analyzer to a
named instance of SQL 2000. I confirmed that the MDAC and SQL Server
driver versions are the most recent and same as mine. She can't
connect via IP, nor by IP,port#. Her Client network settings include
TCP/IP on 1433 and Named Pipes. I tried adding an alias, nothing. I
tried removing TCP/IP, nothing. Her local firewall is turned off.
She can connect fine to a default instance and use the linked server
to query the named instance as a workaround.

The only thing that has changed on her machine is that Office 2007 was
installed.

WHY can she NOT connect directly to the NAME INSTANCE??

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated.

Can she telnet to the IP and port?

I finally got the connection to work by using an alias an specifying
the port number. So she is able to work now but do you know what
might cause this alias as a requirement?

If you can connect by the port number but not the instance name, then check if port 1434 UDP is
passed through your firewalls. This is what the component that translates instance names to port
numbers are listening to. And if you on the server have 2005 stuff, you also need the SQL Server
browser service started.
