We are trying to set up log shipping between two servers
in a Workgroup environment. We have the same
username/password on both servers, but the restore
function does not seem to work. The backup part works
fine. A coworker believes that it has to do with setting
up the job that you need to have the same account (same
sid) on both machines, hence you need a domain.

We have also tried this setup in a domain and it seems to
work fine. Our setup really needs to be a workgroup for
various reasons.

If log shipping will not work in this way, if you can
think of alternatives, I am all ears.

Thanks

If you set up a share where you are backing the data up to on the primary
server, and give EVERYONE access to that share, SQL Server (on the remote
machine) should be able to access the share (and the backup file(s)).

Wouldn't that mean that some acocunt would always have to
be logged onto the machine? I don't believe drive
mappings work as a service.

Offhand, I do not know. Try it and see! You might be right, if the machine
does not have a user logged on, the shares might not apply.

Terry,
In order to setup log shipping in a workgroup you will need to make sure :
1)SQL Server is using an administrative account which exists on both
primary and secondary server.
2)Create a share on the primary server and make sure the secondary server
can see it. A quick way to test this is to run the following command from
query analyzer on the secondary server :
xp_cmdshell 'dir \\servername\share'
3) Use SQL authentication for the monitor server. This will create a new
SQL login 'log_shipping_monitor_probe' with sysadmin priviliges.

Once log shipping is configured, verify that the tran. log backups are
being copied to the secondary server successfully. If for some reason the
SQLMaint jobs do not run on the secondary server try running the command
from query analyzer or command prompt to see if you see any errors.
