Hi,

I wanted to setup an alert to notify me whenever a SQL Server
shutdown or startup event happens. I tried to set up an alert for the
shutdown and startup events, but that doesn't seem to work. Has
anybody tried doing this....If so please let me know, how to solve
this.

Your help in this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks,
Raks

I have not used these monitoring tools, but they may do what you want:

http://www.ntservicemonitor.com/
http://www.google.com/search?q=cache:ns_fvVrXEWMC:www.gt.com.au/smonitor.htm
+%22service+monitor%22&hl=en

Also, if you are using SQL Mail, you could have a startup stored procedure
that would send an email when SQL Server starts....I do not think that you
can send an email (from SQL Server) during a shutdown, however.

If you are using clustering you can write a piece of SQL code to read
from the registry. The PersistentState value changes when the cluster
is offline.
Otherwise write a piece of code to read from error logs and search for
the startup/shutdown strings.

Richard,

Thanks for the input. As you have suggested, I would be
writing code to read from error logs. Thats precisely what I am
planning to do.

Thanks once again.

Cheers,
Raks
