I have checked and I found 2 error messages in the system log files (be
opened from event viewer) when installing the SQL 2005 :

Error Description :
-------------
1. The SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service failed to start due to the
following error:

The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely
fashion.

2. Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the SQL Server
(MSSQLSERVER) service to connect.

Thanks

If your computer has a AMD Phenom 8400 Triple-Core processor then you
can't install it.
I got the same problem and found out its because SQL sever 2005 doesn't
suppor all the processors.

Hi Karim,

I tried to install the hotfix but the result is not working good. The hotfix
cannot be installed because it just for windows 2003 SP1 , my windows 2003
already SP2.

Hi Ronaf,

That's right, my new server using AMD Phenom 8450 triple-core processor with
32 bit windows 2003 server R2 SP2 . I have read the SQL 2005 documentation
about minimum requirement processor support is Pentium III or higher , so I
think AMD Phenom will not make trouble to install. Is there any way to solve
this problem?

Hi Wira,

could you explain to me what's happening exactly?
at the end of the installation it tries to start the service and it fails so
it uninstalls the SQL Server again or what ?

I don't know any, it seems that the processor doesn't allow cache prefetch
or something like that. The bad thing for me is that I bought the computer
just for that!!

Hi Karim,

The error messages showed in the middle of installation, at "SQL Server
Database Service" component,"Reporting Services" component and "Workstation
Components,Books Online and Development Tools" component installation. The
other components could be installed successful. The error message is "The SQL

Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server
Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and
"Starting SQL Server Manually." The error is (1053) The service did not
respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".

After finish installation , the error message is "The SQL 2005 can not be
installed on your computer".

Try the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/954835.

We are using Server 2003 with 6 core processors and came across the same error, but I suspect you might have exactly the same error.

Basically the problem is fixed in SP1, but you need to set the server to start with only 2 or 4 processors before you install Sql server 2005. When you install, apply the latest service pack and restart the server with all off the processors.

Hope it helps.
