I have downloaded SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise from MSDN Subscription
downloads.
When I try to install, after it checked hardware & software, the
installation failes with error "incorrect file format" and then closes down.
This is before any specific installation options are selected. (Run
Setup.exe / Installation / New Installation or add features to an existing
installation / Setup support rules checking - all success / Product Key /
[SQL Server Setup Failure - Incorrect file format]

I then downloaded the Standard eddition and get the same error.

I currently have SQL 2005 installed. I have tried the Upgrade option and
get the same error.

I have tried to install on a different server and same error.

Any idea?

Regards
Andre

It sounds like a bad download of some sort. Or some problem when you
access the ISO file. I downloaded R2 from MSDN a while back, and
had no problem using the ISO image.

Thus, I would try to use a different download path, that is download
to some other machine. Or use a different method to access the ISO file.

Hi All

I have tried the ISO images at home and all is working.
It seems to be something wrong with all the PC's at my office. Could be
that something was installed via a Group Policy (maybe the DotNet Framework)
that has a corrupt file.

I wish there was a log file of some sort with the problem file details.

There is, you find the setup logs under
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Setup Bootstrap\Log

And there is certainly no lack of details - they are very verbose.
