I'm running win 2k sp2 had sql 2k professional addition
installed and tried to apply the sp1 for sql 2k. The sp
failed to complete due to power outage. After restarting
my pc I tried to run sp1 again and got the following
message:

"a previous program installation created a pending file
operations on the installation machine. you must restart
the computer before running setup"

Restarting does nothing, I read previous posting about
removing or renaming the following key which I did but the
same message still appears when running the install:

HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\FileRe
nameOperations

So I tried uninstalling SQL Server and reinstalling, now I
get the same message when I try and reinstall. I do not
have any keys in
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager that
start with pending or file. I have removed all files from
my temp directory. attached is the sqlstp.log which does
not tell me much.

any suggestions would be appreciated

I thought you were supposed to look in
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx

Thanks George I had looked in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
but it was empty.

I finally solved my problem I renamed the directory C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and now I can reinstall I'm not sure why it was not removed during my uninstall.

You are correct. Uninstall will not remove that folder. You should have
seen that in Details after Add/Remove. But I don't know why you got the
"pending action." Because I have uninstalled SQL Server 2000 twice and left
that folder alone. One thing you might check after an uninstall are your
environment variables. Make sure C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\80\bin is not still in the Path or C:\MSSQL\7.0 depending.
