I am trying to upgrade to SQL 2000 SP3a. I just installed SQL 2000 from the
CD and read the Microsft KB about upgrading to SP3a. The article says that
I must know which MSI file was used for my existing MSDE installation before
I can apply SP3a. I was referred to Article KB 311762. The article told me
to look in the registry in various places to determine whether I used
Sqlrun01.msi, SqlRun02.msi, ...sample.msi... or ...
Every place I looked in the registry suggested by the article did not have
this information. Does anyone know how I can determine which MSI was used
on my machine?

First question:

Did you install SQL Server 2000 MSDE or some other edition?

If you installed SQL Server 2000 MSDE from the CD then you should not need
to worry about which MSI file to use. Check out:

815013 HOWTO: Upgrade an instance of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop
Engine.

If you did not install SQL Server 2000 MSDE, but a different edition, then
you can just apply SP3a by running setup.

I installed SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition from the CD . I suppose this
includes MSDE. Therefore, I suppose it in a have to worry about about which
MSI file to use. Does the issue regarding which MSI file was used only
apply if you installed MSDE separately? Perhaps, that is my confusion.
