MicroSoft SQL Server 2000, Windows XP Pro

Installation of Server and Client Tools fails. I did
install MDAC 2.7 but it did not seem to make a difference.

I have attached the sqlstp.log

It looks like the ODBC sql driver has a problem.
Check if you have sqlsrv32.dll in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32
Rename this to sqlsrv32.old and copy the sqlsrv32.dll from the
install CD (X86\SYSTEM) to replace it. Reboot and retry install
Are you sure you choose to just install client tools, the log indicates
installation of the server components (that's where it failed -
configuring the server). Before attempting a reinstall it might be
worth removing traces of the failed install

Hi Vannie,

The error occurred when SQL Server setup could not connect to itself on
configuration stage and failed in
the end. Please follow the steps listed below to setup SQL 2000 again:

1) Please follow the following article to remove SQL Server cleanly.

Q290991 HOW TO: Manually Remove SQL Srv. 2000 Default, Named or Virtual
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q290991

2) Run Regedit.exe and deleted the keys under the following where the
FriendlyName
value was either SQL Server or MDAC:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\ExceptionCom

3) Then reboot the server to allow the changes take affect.

4) Please reinstall MDAC 2.6. You can download MDAC 2.6 from
www.microsoft.com/data
<http://www.microsoft.com/data> website.
After install completes, make sure the following key exists:
HKLM\Software\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\SQL Server

5) Reboot the server.
6) Refer to Q192710 to stop the Conflicting Services:

Q192710 INF: Basic Guidelines for Installing SQL Server 6.5 or 7.0
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q192710>

7) Install SQL 2000 again.

I already starting to uninstall Sql Server before
receiving your replies. I was unable to resintall SQL
Server due to the same error appearing during the
installation.

I did replace the sqlsrv32.dll as Jasper had mentioned
and that did allow me to complete the installation.

I was able to recover and get back to my original
environment. Thank you for your assistance.
