So, I took a server, completely re-formated the machine and installed
Windows 2003 Standard.
I tried to install the SQL 2005 SSMS and it still fails. Does anybody have
ideas or run into a similar situation?

Is that frustrating of what?
So how does it fail?
And more how exactly, how do you try to install?
Good to hear that you got it resolved, but too bad you first had to
flatten your machine.
(Next time you run into such an issue, make a clean install on a virtual
machine, rather than format and start over.)
If you have an MSDN subscription, Virtual Server, or whatever it's called,
is included, I believe.
Else the license for VMWare Workstation is an investment you will not
regret. Virtual machines are perfect for this kind of things.
