Hi there,

I have a clean installation of WinXP SP2 and of SQL Server 2005 Dev, SQL
Express and Visual Studio 2005 Prof. on it.

When I try to start SQL Server Configuration Manager I get the following
error message:

Cannot connect to WMI provider. You do not have permission or the server is
unreachable. Note that you can only manage SQL Server 2005 servers with SQL
Server Configuration Manager.
Access is denied. [0x80070005]

What can I do to get the Configuration Manager started (for localhost)

Note by: Surface Area Configuration reports something similar:

Configure Surface Area for localhost
Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections

reports

configured remotely. Verify that the remote computer has the required Windows

Hello,

Many factors can cause the error and I suggest that you perform the
following steps to narrow down the issue:

Step 1: Log on the server locally as an administrative user account. Create
a new administrative user account.

Step 2: Log off and log on ocally as the new administrative user account.
Check the issue again.

Step 3: Run filemon and RegMon to check if there is a file or registry
problem:

FileMon:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/filemon.shtml

RegMon:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/source/regmon.shtml

1. Start FileMon to monitor the file system events.
2. Start Configuration Manager to repro the problem.
3. Stop FileMon and check the log. Check if there is any access denied
error.
4. Start RegMon. Repro the problem. Check if there is any access denied
error.

If the issue still exists, send me the FileMon and RegMon log file for
research.

Step 4: Check the SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files.

How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143702(en-US,SQL.90).aspx

How to: Read a SQL Server 2005 Setup Log File
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms144287(en-US,SQL.90).aspx

If the issue still exists, package all the files located in
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG folder and send
it to me for research.

Package all the files located in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\LOG folder and send it to me for research.

Please also send me Windows application and system log for research.
Please write the email subject as --31651189: Error Starting SQL Server
Configuration Manager due to WMI. My email address is v-s...@microsoft.com

I look forward to hearing from you.
