Setting the protocol to named pipes killed
all connectivity between the servers.
Any other ideas?

Switch to TCP/IP if you can.

It works with TCP/IP between the SQL 7 I run and the remote SQL 6.5 subscriber, but I switched to named pipes because of an earlier suggestion as a fix to my original problem of login failed user "xxx" not trusted.
Do I need to use NT authentication on both sides.

Try setting up linked servers on both servers with trusted connections, also
make sure the servers are running under trusted as well. Finally, under
client network utility for each server make sure it set to TCP/IP. Hope this
helps.
