As I already reported, after several setup even on different PCs I get the
same error each time I open Excel:

Microsoft Excel can't run this add-in.
Microsoft Excel cannot install the necessary files due to Windows Installer
error 1605.
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed.

This dialog box is displayed 5 times when I open Excel, in any condition.
I tried to get some element to start an investigation, but there is no error
on file system or on registry access that could be "suspected" to be the
responsible.

Someone can help me to further investigate? Any hint?

Hello, what version of Excel are you using when you
install the Excel Add-in? The Excel Add-in for SQL Server
Analysis Services is supported on Excel 2003 and also on
Excel 2003 (XP). In addition, please make sure you have
the latest service pack for Excel 2002 XP.

Hope this helps!

Jeff

Jeff,

I'm experiencing this same error on Windows Server 2003 Std, with Office 2003. I can work with the Add-in, but the error is really annoying. I've rebooted to see if that would fix it - no dice. Have any suggestions? I'm having a heck of a time manuvering in it - it will take some getting used to compared to a PivotTable.

Thanks,
Mark

Mark,
In my opinion there are at least 5 or 6 Excel add-ins from 3rd party
suppliers which are much better than the solutions accelerator. The
main ones with significant customer bases in large organisations are
MIS Plain, Intelligent Apps and XlCubed.

I work for XLCubed so I would say this but I have not seen or heard
much positive about the add-in and in some ways it helps us as if
Microsoft believe that an approach over and above pivot tables is
needed then it validates our approach.

Writing OLAP excel add-ins is non trivial and trying to make them
provide flexibility, ease of use and performance is hard ( I used to
have hair!!) and for the independents we will always have to have a
much better offering than what is on the market from Microsoft
otherwise we die ..

Given that the OSA is essentially free we have to try and ensure our
offerings save time for end users, deliver superior functionality,
work faster, work in older versions of Excel such that the
cost/benefit case stacks up as at the end of the day that is all that
matters.

At least now our approach cannot be questioned we just need to make
the numbers stack up which they do.

I reccommend then when people take a look at OSA that they also take a
look at the main 3rd party players and compare and contrast.

Thanks

Mark

When the Microsoft OLAP platform hit the market I was pleasantly
surprised how good it was. However, coming from a TM1 background, I
knew that an Excel add-in was very much needed.

I constantly went on about the need for one & felt I was almost
pleading for someone to make one. Some people at the time couldn't
understand why I went on & on about it.

Then they all seemed to come at once, BIXL, VisualOLAP, O2OLAP, MIS
Plain, IntelligentApps & XLCubed.

I had demos from some, software to review from others & I tried to
objectively state the weaknesses with each.

I then did a review of most of them last summer:
http://www.johnkeeley.com/excel_add-ins_functionality.htm

And from what I've seen of them they all compare favourably to
Microsofts offering.

XLCubed in particular is designed with a good understanding how
end-users work; it is simply to use but powerful.

Plain, whilst not so user friendly, can create web-based reports for
reporting services, which is quite handy.

And they are not expensive.

Most serious analysts work with Excel. Let them keep Excel but solve
the data integrity problem by using a decent 3rd party Excel add-in.

This is the way to get a good return on your BI investment.
