I'm on Win2K, SQL2K & SP3. The AS crashed when creating database roles. I
could no longer start AS. It always shows the following error in the event
log:"Application popup: SqlDumper.exe - Entry Point Not Found : The procedure
entry point MiniDumpWriteDump could not be located in the dynamic link
library dbghelp.dll." .

I copied the dbghelp.dll file from MSSQL\Binn folder to the Analysis
Services\Bin folder. The previous error message no longer showed up but only
says the service was terminated unexpectedly. Does any one encounter similar
situation before?

Thanks.

Well, it's difficult to know why your server is crashing on startup without
more information, but here's a wild guess: since you say you were creating
database roles, memory might be an issue. Were you using dimension security?
Or it could be some kind of dimension corruption. Searching the archives of
this ng in Google might throw up something useful.

If you have a support contract with Microsoft, you should send them any
minidump files (*.mdmp) you find on your machine - when the AS service
'terminates unexpectedly', sqldumper.exe creates one of these in your Data
directory and the contents (stack traces, I think) can be used MS support to
diagnose your problem. Your original error message about SqlDumper.exe is
unrelated to whatever is causing your crash - it's caused by a separate
problem with SP3 installing the dbghelp.dll needed by SqlDumper to the wrong
directory, which you've fixed now.

Chris has the right idea - this usually happens (dbghelp.dll issues aside)
when a Dimension is corrupt.

Thanks for your reply. I kinda "fixed" the problem. Since the service crashed
when I was working on one of the databases, I just deleted that particular
database folder and meta data file from the AS data folder. After that the AS
services started as expected, I then fully process the database. Everything
is back on track now. Again, thanks for your help.
