I've got a problem with linking using Transoft ODBC driver
to SQL Server 2000. If you can give me some suggestion
once again please...

1. I install transoft odbc, create system DNS, i called
dsn optimum
2. i'm tring to create linked server using:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver nazwa_linka
@server = 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@datasrc = 'optimum'
GO

- if I try to list tables it blocks sql server

------------------------------------------------
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver nazwa_linka
@server = 'Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC',
@srvproduct = '',
@provider = 'MSDASQL',
@provstr = 'DSN=optimum;UID=login;PWD=password;'
GO

- i get error:
Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported error. The
provider did not give any information about error.

Thanks in advance...

When I try to run Select statement from Query Analyzer for linked server
I receive error:

Server: Msg 7399, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
OLE DB provider 'MSDASQL' reported an error. The provider did not give
any information about the error.
OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'MSDASQL' IDBInitialize::Initialize
returned 0x80004005: The provider did not give any information about
the error.].

This start happend after instalation of Service Pack 3 for SQL Server.

Maybe I should install some hot fixes to start linked server with
transoft odbc,

Thanks in advance,

Hi Jakub,

From your post, the problem occurs when you use "sp_addlinkedserver" to add
the linked server to a Transoft DSN. It seems that the two TSQL statements
both failed.

Since the problem involves a third party ODBC driver Microsoft does not
directly support, I suggesy that you contact Transoft.

1. Try to verify the conformance level of the ODBC driver.

2. The correct syntax to add a linked server to a Transoft DSN.

You may also contact Microsoft Product Support Services at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-US;CNTACTMS. However,
I think we also need to involve Transoft.

Hi Jakub,

Since this issue involves a third-party product, I suggest that you contact
Transoft to check if the ODBC driver is comformant and the correct syntax
to add linked server. You may also contact Microsoft PSS. We need to
involve the third party for further checking.

Transoft ODBC... ugh, I've had experience with this and their support is a
joke.

What version of tsodbc32.dll and tsods32.dll do you have?

Cheers,
Dave

I also 've got some experience, not only with Transoft - they are not
bad but ...

My versions:
tsodbc32.dll - 3.10.1.101
tsods32.dll - 3.10.0.0

On AIX server i've got Transoft v. 3.10.0332,

Thanks,

Hi Jakub,

I am afraid that Microsoft does not support any third-party product. This
issue involves a third-party ODBC driver which we are not familiar with.
You would contact the third-party vendor for this problem.

I think you can check with other Microsoft-provided ODBC driver to test if
there is any problem (e.g. Microsoft Excel driver). If there is no problem,
it indicates that the problem is due to Transoft ODBC driver.

1) SQL Server connection to U/SQL via Linked Servers.

In order to use Linked Servers in SQL Server you will need
to have the latest revisions of the U/SQL software
installed on both Client and Server (limited support for
Linked Servers was first introduced in the tsodbc32.dll
3.10.0307 and Server engine v3.10.0332) . In addition you
will need to enable the FixedLengthCharType=Y directive in
the usqlsd.ini file. For example:

[books.udd]

Dictionary=../example/books.udd

Directory=../example

FixedLengthCharType=Y

A linked server connection to USQL can either be created

a) manually in the SQL Server Enterprise Manager

(select Security - Linked Server - New Linked Server -
OLE DB for ODBC and then enter the DSN name in the DSN
box. All other entries are not required.)

or

b) executing a system stored procedure (in the Query
Analyser) using:

EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server='TRANSOFT'

,@datasrc='books.udd'

,@provider='MSDASQL'

,@srvproduct='ANY'

To interrogate your UDD via a linked server use the
following syntax:

select * from OpenQuery(<linked_server_name>,"Select *
from <table>")

2) Required Licensing to access U/SQL via a Linked Server

If you install the U/SQL Client on a Server based Windows
Operating System (Terminal Server, NT Server, 2000 Server)
OR if you use a service based application (SQL Server,
Crystal Web Reports etc) to access the U\SQL Client layer
then you will need to have a specific type of license
(Transoft calls this a Gateway license - this is
identifiable by a P2 in the license code string ) .
