sql server as file server os?

total newbie question re: servers,
i have some programming experience but none in general IT or servers
at previous job we used small business server as file server...
My understanding was that was the operating system running on the server box
client boxes ran windows xp and just accessed the server for common file
storage

at new job i inquired (out of curiousity) what server they were using and
was told Sql Server.
My limited experience with sql is just as database access language, so was
confused to think of it as an operating system

is there a simple beginning explanation of what sql server is as relates to
using as a simple file server...

i'd like to have at least a general understanding of basic IT issues just
for background knowlege

Very shortly
SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) from Microsoft
that's designed for the enterprise environment. SQL Server runs on T-SQL
(Transact -SQL),

Possibly the system stores documents as XML in a SQL Server database.That
is, XML text stored as a value in a table. Each record can be quite large
and holds the entire text of the document.
Possibly the system uses the SQL Server Filestream feature to store the
documents in a file system and controls access through SQL Server.
SQL Server is installed onto a Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows
Server 2003, or Windows Server 2008 operating system, as an application.

So I think the person who responded to my question didn't understand what
sql server was
I asked what os the server was running , sbs or whatever, he said sequel
server.
I think that's just a database system they have which is also on the server
(he wasn't an IT guy, just the company owner)

not you,... the person at work who i asked what os the server was running.
they replied sql server, that's what confused me originally
