I tried and failed to install MSDE on Vista. I also tried and failed on
Windows 7. I was able to install SQL Server 2005 Express on Vista and attach
an MSDE database.

you can try installing and using SQLExpress 2008 and verify the software can
use that version of the dbms..
you can probably contact the producer for info about that..

Has anyone been able to install MSDE 2000 SP4 in Windows 7's Windows XP Mode?
I have been trying to do this for a week, but without success. I am trying to
install MSDE 2000 into a new Dell Inspiron 1750 laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU. I
have tried many of the fixes suggested on the web, such as
- deleting regedit entries as suggested by microsoft
- deleting MSSQLServer folders
- disabling PAE
- computer name all UPPER case
But the installation always stop with about 5 more seconds to go, and then
ends with a message: Setup failed to configure the server.
I have even re-installed a new XP operating system in the Virtual PC, and
tried to install MSDE 2000 (before anythine else is installed), and the same
error message occurs. I would appreciate help with this issue.
By the way, I need to install MSDE 2000 in XP Mode, because I have other
legacy programs that only run in XP Mode (not in Windows 7) and these
programs requires MSDE 2000 SP4.

as you already know, the traditional info about the exception is
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/816499..
please try adding the
/L*v "c:\msde_log.txt"
to the command line parameters in order to enable verbose logging of the
install process..
you can later inspect the text file for
"RETURN VALUE 3"
entries, indicating a problem, and perhaps more info will be available..

MSDE as stated is NOT supported by w7 however be that as it may,you can
download and install virtual PC,then after you have done this download IE
Privew (IE9) install this and another AV Product (in this case) Avast or AVG
will suffice,On virtual PC you have whatever enviroment out in that Virtual
PC.you can use w7 in XP Mode,or SQL Home server 2008,whatever you want you
can achieve Just do it one step at a time,if you have any trouble go to
w7forum.com this SAME WORKAROUND has been done SUCCESSFULLY check it out see
the man Catilley he was the member that actually achieved this same idea he
was not using MSDE as far as that goes, but give this a go as I did and it
does work well on X64bit not 32bit
