SQL Server 7.0 backups and Quantum DLT 7000 Tape Drive

Am having troubles backing up to this tape drive.
Keep getting this message:
..etc....(see below)

Have replaced tapes, cleaned tape drive, tried 3 different tape drivers,
have tried manual backups (same result).
Have even replaced the tape drive with brand-new.
I know that SQL server 7.0 changed the way the server saw tape drives, but
if someone could elaborate or recommend a way to get this thing to work, I'd
be grateful.
No problem backup with 6.5 on this drive.
No problem backup of NT backup.
Just when I use SQL 7.0 and its maintenance stuff.
If I back up to the disk, works great!
