Firstly, I'm completely new to SQL Server and may need guided by the hand
until I get this solved.

From VS2008 Server Explorer I elect to "Create a new SQL Server Database"
and get the first dialog

I select ACER as the server name (The only option). "The log on to the
server" I leave as "Use Windows Authentication" (This was the option I used
while installing SQL Server). Next I enter the database name and click "OK"

After a while I get an error dialog stating:

"A network related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a
connection to SQL server. The server was not found or was not accessible.
Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL server is configured
to allow remote connections (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 -
Could not open a connection to SQL server"

Can anyone tell me what I'm missing.

As far as I can see SQL Server is running, it chows as running in the
Configuration Manager.

TIA

For a quick tutorial on connecting, see Getting Started with the Database
Engine http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms345318(SQL.90).aspx
This won't help you with the VS aspects, but it will help you get SQL Server
ready to accept connections, and will help you understand what's going on.
