I'd had to uninstall the 2005 Tools a couple of months ago because my
backlog of Windows Updates failed with a message involving 2005. A couple
of years ago I was working on stuff involving "COMPlus," but, frankly, I'm
not sure what application this involves. Perhaps I need to re-install
that??? Whatever it is?

I think it was elsewhere.
I don't think getting different media will help. Probably something
is hosed with your machine. If you can open a case with Microsoft, they
may be able to save you from having to flatten the disk.
