Hi, I've recently purchased a new machine, and unlike my old one, Microsoft
Sam is the only voice output availiable. Personally, Microsoft Sam drives me
insane. I've been trying to get the voice of "LH Michael" onto my new
machine, and have downloaded and installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads/user.asp#tts , both the English
and British versions. After this did not solve my problem, I downloaded and
installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/msagent/downloads/user.asp#sapi , however both of
these moves proved inconclusive to my problem, and I still have the lonesome
Microsoft Sam as the only output TTS availiable. Any help in solving my
problem would be great, thanks.

Microsoft's Mike and Mary voices are far better than Sam.

Take a look at http://www.bytecool.com/voices.htm

I think the LH Michael voice would have come from an install of Microsoft
Office {either XP or 2003 but I'm not certain}.

The SAPI SDK will install Mike and Mary voices, as well as lots of other
stuf http://www.microsoft.com/speech/download/old/sapi5.asp

As Nigel says, there are lots of other voices around. Vista also replaces
Microsoft Sam with a new voice Microsoft Anna.

I ran into the same issue and found the following solution:

Download the following:

http://www.text-speech.com/voices/Sp5TTIntXP.msi

Install. (Note that the installer is a little funny--I just Unzipped the
file to my desktop.)

When you open "Speech" in the Control Panel, Mary, Mike, and Michael will be
waiting for you.

I'm new to this discussion business and find it really confusing to figure
out how to get into the thing.

I'm having a problem with Word text-to-speech. Since I can't figure out how
to start a new thread I thought maybe I could horn in on this discussion and
maybe get the answer I'm looking for.

Here's the problem: Sam talks for just about a minute and then shuts down. I
start him talking again and again after a minute he shuts down. I've looked
every place trying to find that box I have to check to make the guy keep
talking to the end of the document.

Any advice?

Thanks

I am looking to find out where I can download additional Windows Vista
Ultimate voices for text-to-speech. None of the replies to this thread have
addressed this specific question or the replies do not work with Vista, but
they did work on my old faithful XP machine. Can you point me in the right
direction to the Vista voices? Thank you.

Hello,

Yes - it seems impossible to find anywhere, or to have someone answer
it.....Does anybody know if there are additional voices besides Microsoft
Anna for Windows Vista?

Thanks

If you want decent sounding text to speech voices you will have to pay
for them. RealSpeak voices work with Windows Vista and are far
superior to the free Microsoft voices (including Anna). You can have a
listen to them here and decide for yourself.

I am impressed with the Text2Go software. But they have some
restrictions I can't handle. Does anyone know some TTS software I can
use for a YouTube cartoon I'm working on? I'm glad to pay for it as
long as it's reasonable.

note the SAPI v5.0 can be downloaded from microsoft's site
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5e86ec97-40a7-453f-b0ee-6583171b4530&DisplayLang=en

Download:
Sp5TTIntXP.exe - to add Mike and Mary.
ALSO DOWNLOAD:
msttss22L.exe - This upgrades the TTS engine.*
*Doing so cleans up the voices somewhat and almost makes Sam bearable.

You should try an online Text to Speech service like http://www.iSpeech.org/

They give you the best voices anywhere.

For developers iSpeech has a simple to use Text to Speech API:

All this is fine and dandy, but I've a question that I can't seem to find an
answer to.
I have Vista and the Anna voice is fine for some things but where can I get
Sam. Call it nostalgia, call it what you will but i kind of liked the
annoying bugger.

This half-worked for me. I installed it, and the voices showed up in text to
speech fine. However, if I try and select the voices, it gives me an error
saying "This voice cannot be played. Please try selecting another voice or
selecting a different audio output device". Any luck on helping me solve the
problem?
