Hi Guys,

I have noticed a problem on one of my downstream WSUS servers, Main Summary
page says "Downloading 0.00 of 900mb" in status of downloads. I also get the
following error on my event logs :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event Category: Synchronization
Event ID: 364
Date: 10/19/2006
Time: 2:06:00 AM
User: N/A
Computer: US-CAR-LSD-01
Description:
Content file download failed. Reason: The requested resource requires user
authentication.
Source File: /Content/CB/010EEBA9D7BECCCDB3073B2071821D9302B1CBCB.CAB
Destination File:
e:\WSUS\WsusContent\CB\010EEBA9D7BECCCDB3073B2071821D9302B1CBCB.CAB.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

There is no proxy server, the server is definately on the internet, i have
tried changing the update service to "local system" to no avail, and there
doesnt seem to be anything on the web or at MS about this error. There is
also more than enough space left on the HD.

I would appreciate it if anyone can shed any light on the situation! thanks

Alex

Looks like somebody's been changing permissions on your upstream server.

Does the /content virtual directory still have ANONYMOUS permissions?

Thanks for the quick response, did what you said, still had the same issue,
so i went back to the permissions on the /content V directory and propergated
the permissions down to the sub folders and all my WSUS kicked into life!

Thanks loads for your help! I will be using this site more often now!

:D

Ah, yes, I failed to mention that detail, but the permissions on ~\WSUS
should be inherited down through ~\WSUSContent and all subfolders and files.

From http://wsusinfo.onsitechsolutions.com/articles/016.htm

The \WSUS folder should have:
Full Control: SYSTEM, Administrators
Read/Read & Execute/List Folder Contents: Users, NetworkService
and these permissions should be inherited to \WSUS\WSUSContent, but not
\WSUS\MSSQL$WSUS

Hi,

I have the same issue :

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event Category: Synchronization
Event ID: 364

Date: 11/28/2008
Time: 2:17:38 PM
User: N/A
Computer: VERSWMGMT01
Description:
Content file download failed. Reason: The client does not have sufficient
access rights to the requested server object.
Source File: /Content/92/C7E8604CA3021B24A64977BF12C1AA462AB9AE92.CAB
Destination File:
d:\WSUS\WsusContent\92\C7E8604CA3021B24A64977BF12C1AA462AB9AE92.CAB.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

But the permissions on the folder are correct.

Do you have any other ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

I had been having the same problem with just some updates not downloading and
Event ID 364 in the application event log.
Having been through all the permission scenarios, I started looking
elsewhere and found it to be due to ur web washer program.
We were seeing 403 Forbidden responses when accessing
download.windowsupdate.com from our WSUS servers through Webwasher. Taking
Webwasher out of the loop results in everything working and 206 Partial
Content responses at our proxies, which makes me think Webwasher is
configured (or can't cope with) GET requests including a RANGE for partial
content downloads.

Hope this helps someone else.
