SUS SP1 has been released and is ready for download!!

The SUS website has been update to reflect the new release. You can go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/default.asp to check
it out and download the latest server bits with the integrated SP1 changes.

With this update to SUS 1.0 we have addressed some key customer issues with
the former release and improved the robustness of SUS 1.0 with several bugs
fixes. SUS administrators can now take advantage of some awesome new
functionality including "Reschedule Automatic Updates scheduled
installations" and "No auto-restart for scheduled Automatic Updates
installations." If you want to know the details of these enhancements and
the other changes check out the release notes at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/windowsupdate/sus/sp1relnotes.asp.
There have also been changes (mostly minor) made to the Deployment Guide, so
you may want to download a new copy of that as well.

Can you use the updated WUAU.ADM with SUS 1.0 (no SP)?

Sure, but any clients that are pointed at a SUS 1.0 (non SP1) server won't
be updated to the SP1 client binaries, and won't respect the new policy keys
because they don't "know" about them.

Don, I was not able to find setting to block choice for local admins to
disable install of updates on theirs workstations. Was anything made in that
direction or not? This feature was amongst most wanted. I want to know if
Microsoft listens to users requests at all?

If you configure the client's Automatic Updates settings
through Group Policy, the local administrators cannot
change those settings.

Is that what you're asking for? If you need this
functionality but aren't using group policy, I imagine you
could manually set the registry keys, then remove the
local administrators' permission to write those keys...

Now I was talking not about that. In old SUS when I configured all
settings through GPO, yes, local admin was unable to change anything.
BUT. When updates install time comes local admin gets message that
updates want to be installed. BUT he can press no and updates will never
be installed in that way. I wanted to know if Sp1 has the ability to
disable ability for the local admin to press no. Initial version had no
such ability.

That ability will likely exist in the next version of SUS, but was not
included in the service pack due to the code changes that it would have
required. I know that having the ability to prevent the local admin from
postponing the install, or even doing the install manually instead of on
schedule (or even being notified of *anything* through the tray icon) is a
heavily requested feature.

When are you going to release next version of SUS? Will it be available
for free?

We're aiming for the end of this year, although we don't have a set date at
this time. Yes, it will still be free.
