I am in a closed environment where the only machine that
can contact the internet is the SUS Server. For security
reason I have to keep it this way. I setup SUS on this
server and everything works fine on the server. I can
update all my domain controllers and a few workstations.
About 40 of my workstations get the error in the subject
line in the Windows Update Log. The event log gives me
Event ID 16 saying it could not contact the SUS Server.
The IIS Logs on the SUS Server are filled w/ failures
during the AU phase of the update. Does anyone have any
ideas on what might be causing this issue?

Thanks,
Dave West

The error you see is Internet Name not Resloved error. Check if the SUS
server is accessible from the client machines using IE. There is some
problem with name resolution.

Please let me know if you need more help.

Thanks,
Jose

The Name of the SUS Server is 'ARES' the IP Address is
192.168.0.10

I have tried to put both NETBIOS anme and ip address in
the GPO for access and both give the same results. Seems
like there is an issue not being able to access the
internet from the clients???

Try the simple test. Open IE on any of the client that is not able to
connect to SUS server and specify the URL that you had set as SUS server
using GP and try to download the patches by specifying the path to the
patches. If IE is able to resolve the name then SUS clients also should not
be having any problems.

If you post the GP settings registry keys it would be helpful to debug
further.

Thanks,
Jose

I tried Jose's hint concerning the hostname-resolution problem. (Thanks to
Jose!) but when i try to open the URL in IE it works fine and the "Under
Contruction" page of IIS is shown. NSLOOKUP of the DNS-Hostname resolves the
IP ...Everything appears as if it were OK.

My AU Client Configuration looks like this:
======================================================================
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate]
"WUServer"="http://sus.hitec-zang.de/"
"WUStatusServer"="http://sus.hitec-zang.de/"

"NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers"=dword:00000001
"NoAutoUpdate"=dword:00000000
"RescheduleWaitTime"=dword:00000001
"ScheduledInstallDay"=dword:00000000
"ScheduledInstallTime"=dword:0000000c
"UseWUServer"=dword:00000001
======================================================================

Do you have any idea?

Thanks,

David Kluge

P.S.: As mentioned in KB326596 the error 0x80190194 can be ignored.

Same problem here. Started last weekend. Five machines, 3 2000 Pro, 2
XP Pro, all the same thing. Loaded the latest windows scripting tool
from MSDN, flushed DNS, everything I could think of, no luck. I think
something is seriously dorked at MS.

I am troubleshooting similar issues. Do any of you have
an entry in the w3svc logfiles on your SUS server that
relate to the URLscan that is configured when you install
SUS? IE: 141, 235, 401, 5, GET, /<Rejected-By-UrlScan>,
~/,

I think i got a soultion for this Problem.

I just tried a resynchronisation with the Microsoft Update server.
Now the requested URL looks like this:
http://SUSserver/autoupdate/getmanifest.asp

instread of

http://SUSserver/v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/autoupdate/getmanifest.asp
