Service Pack?

I was under the impression that SUS-SP1 did not provide for
distributing service packs.

However, today my SUS server is downloading the 129.2MB 'Windows 2000
Service Pack 4 Network Install for IT Professionals' as part of its
synchronisation.

Is this newly available functionality, or a screw-up? Is it safe to
release Win2k SP4 via SUS? Are there any side-effects to authorising
this for machines which already have SP4+Updates or will they simply
ignore the update?

Thanks,

Chris

yeah i just noticed that. Dunno whats going on, but glad the option is
there.

Am debating weather to roll it out though as I have no idea how long it will
take to install via this method, nor what the performance hit to the PCs
will be....

I'm assuming they will ignore the service pack if they already have it, n
the same way they ignore other updates.

It was discussed earlier in this group and was a planned release. Not a
whole lot of pre-release info from MS though...

Yeah I noticed it there this morning. I think I'll still stick to rolling
out via GPO it gives a bit more control of targeting which workstations gets
the SP and when.

Be nice to hear of some feedback from anyone who does the install via SUS

We started releasing Service Packs (starting with Windows 2000 SP4 and
Windows XP SP1) through SUS about 8 hours ago. I apologize for the lack of
advance notice and will take that into consideration if something like this
happens again (doubtful). I think we might have been nervous about stating
a date for doing this and announcing it widely, if we didn't hit that date.
We were going to release service packs last week but decided not to since
the recently released MS03-039 security update was released last week and we
didn't want to distract from the importance of that patch.
