I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium, and have automatic updates
set..but only to notify me, not to install.
I get the notification that Security Update for Microsoft .NET
Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 (KB929729) is available, and
important. It won't install. I get this update notification daily,
and the same thing happens.

Now, do I really need this file, how do I get it to download, and if
not, how do I stop the notification.

TIA

BK

Check the event viewer and see what error appears when you try to install
it.

We need more info about the error.

Cheers

We're having similar problems with the .NET Framework 3.5 & .NET Family SP1
service pack on Windows XP. So far, I've found a fix that takes a while,
but works. It might take some tweaking to get the same results for Vista,
but it can't hurt to try it.

1) Go into your Add/Remove programs control panel and uninstall anything
referring to .NET Framework.
2) Download and run the Dotnetfx cleanup_tool.exe
http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/04/08/406671.aspx
3) Delete the following registry entries:
* navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework and delete any
keys and values that have 1.2, 2.0, or 3.x in it, including keys/values that
are in subkeys underneath .NETFramework
* navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\Policy and delete
any key or value that has 1.2, 2.0 or 3.x in it.
* navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\ASP.NET and delete any key or
value that has 1.2, 2.0 or 3.x in it, including keys/values that are in
subkeys underneath ASP.NET.
4) Delete the following folders:
* Go to %windir%\assembly and delete anything with 1.2, 2.0 or 3.x in
the folder name. Delete the GAC_32 and GAC_MSIL folders as well.
(NOTE: If you can't view the contents of %windir%\assembly, set the
following registry value and reopen Windows Explorer:
* Key name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Fusion
Value name: DisableCacheViewer
Data type: REG_DWORD
Value data: 1
Make sure to remove the DisableCacheViewer value after you complete this
step.
* Go to %windir%\Microsoft.NET\Framework and delete any folders named
v1.2, v2.0 or v3.x along with all of the files and subfolders they contain.
You may get errors when trying to delete some of the files because they are
in use. In most cases, rebooting the machine and trying again will work.
If not, you can rename the files to be <filename>.old and then delete them
after a future reboot.
5) Delete the following local user account:
* Right-click on My Computer and choose Manage. Expand Computer Management
(Local), then Local Users and Groups, then click on the Users folder. In the
right-hand pane, right-click on the ASPNET user account and choose Delete to
remove it.
6) Rename %windir%\system32\mscoree.dll to mscoree.dll.old.

Try reinstalling the failed updates manually starting with the oldest.

Good luck!
Anne
