I am attempting to move the SMS 2003 SP2 site database from SQL Server 2000
to SQL Server 2005. The catch is this: 1.) The SMS Setup Wizard has a 15
character limitation in the SQL Server name field and 2.) We are using a
non-default SQL Server 2005 instance.

For example, our SQL Server 2005 instance is: SQL-OPCTR-01\UTILITIES. When I
try to specific the SQL Server name at the Database Modification screen of
the SMS Setup Wizard, I can only type in the first 15 characters of the SQL
Server name, SQL-OPCTR-01\UT.

Does SMS 2003 SP2 support non-default SQL Server 2005 instances? I know it
supports SQL Server 2005, but maybe it is only default SQL Server 2005
instances.

I believe that is correctly, SMS 2003 only support the default instance.
ConfigMgr can be installed on a named instance.
