NetMon error

I tried the two following methods of installing Network Monitor and both
yield the same error message when I run NetMon from the Admimistrative Tools
menu.

Method 1: Add/Remove Programs --> Windows Components --> blah blah...
Network Monitoring Tools. The driver is installed successfully and I see the
shortcut in the start menu.

Method 2: Directly from the SMS 2003 MSDN CD-ROM. The driver is installed
correctly and the Administrative Tools has the new program group for Network
Monitor.

The host is a fresh build of Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition Gold
Release. No SP1 beta code or anything.

The error I get when I first launch Netmon is as follows:

"The system reported no protocol Parsers! Please reinstall, Network Monitor
requires protocol parsers".

The strange thing is that when I install from the SMS 2003 CD, the parsers
directory is EMPTY, but when I install from the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM
(via Add/Remove Windows Components), it puts parers there (lots of 'em), but
I still get the error when I run Netmon.

Is there a registry tweak or something that I can do to fix this?

Please help!

Hello Basim,

There are a few things that may be wrong here but lets start with the
basics.

1. You should not have the Windows 2003 version of Network Monitor
installed if you intend to use the SMS version.
Please uninstall BOTH versions and then install only the SMS version from
the CD.

2. The two versions of SMS use completely different directoires on the
harddrive. The Windows 2003 version uses c:\winnt\systerm32\netmon and the
SMS version uses c:\program files\Microsoft Network Monitor\.
After completing number 1 please check the c:\program files\Microsoft
Network Monitor\parsers directory for the parser files.

3. We also generate an install.log file for network monitor. If the two
steps above do not solve the problem attach the install.log file from the
c:\program files\Microsoft Network Monitor\parsers directory to your reply.

Thank you for your time.
