I created a query to find winword.exe and recieve multiple versions of
Winword.exe. My assumption is that there is only one version of Winword.exe
on the client, but it has been updated by windows update and SCCM has
captured each version. Since I would like to build a collection from this
query and then use it to upgrade office, I am concerned that SCCM will try to
install office as many times that the client shows up in the query. My
thought was to clear aged history, but am not sure which task clears software
inventory history. I am assuming that "Delete Aged Inventory History" is the
proper task to do this???

It there is only 1 winword.exe on each PC then you should only see it
once within ConfigMgr, unless there is an issue with the WMI or Dup
GUIDs.

Try forcing a full software inventory on the WS.

Secondly, ConfigMgr will not try to install and application twice unless
you tell it to. Look at the Program rerun behavior.

I would not delete client history.

Ran a Report from SCCM and found that it is finding winword.exe in a
$patchcache$

Ok, so take a look at the "Program rerun behavior" option.
