Also, the network type for that computer in Computer Properties > Network,
is identified as LANMAN instead of Microsoft Windows Network. I've checked
in Network > properties on the client machine, and there the net is marked
as microsoft network...
And is there a way of forcing the client software to be installed on a
given drive instead of the drive with the most free space ?
I'm currently using SMS 1.2 sp2 on a NT4sp3 server.

Try the run key in the registry.
