how can we modify metadata for file in document library

we have uploaded file programmatically using Share point Api to document
library
some of its methods supports few property to be set as default while adding
file to library
but still some of the property are not set or are set as per assumption of
portal.

to be precise while programmatically uploading file to document library i
need to set my own title and description properties for that particular file.
any solution???
