content index disk space and gatherer

Have one content index that keeps eating up a ton of disk space. The index
itself is only 400mb but the files in \sharepoint\data\ are 30 gig. No
logging options are set on the index. There is one .Hash.gthr.Dir file that
is 16 gig. Why are these so large, is there a way to maintain these by
resetting them anywhere ? Looking for suggestions or documentation on best
ways to maintain indexes.
