Hello,
I am looking at buying Sharepoint. I want to know if you can link the
sharepoint storage to another file server or if it has to be stored on the
sharepoint server?

Jim,
You don't have to move your content into SharePoint, you can add file
shares, Exchange Public Folders, and websites to you content indexing and
make it available in SharePoint.
