Hi,
I'm new to Sharepoint and have just added a document to the portal document
library and published it. I thought that I'd be able to check it out and
edit it without the need for Office XP or Office 2003? I understood that I
couldn't edit it directly cut I thought I could check the document out to my
local desktop, edit it, then checki t back in.

Can any one explain how I can achieve this?

Thanks,

John

John,

If you are trying to do this through the published link to the file you will
run into problems. What you will need to do is go into the document library
where the document actually lives. There you have the ability through the
drop down menu displayed for each document to check out and then download it
to your local machine for editing.

Mike,
I understand what you're saying. I am in the document library but I get a
different "view" in the portal server document library to the one that I get
in a WSS site document library - I don't understand why the views are
different
