Hi,
This is probably the wrong newsgroup for this post, but I could not find a
newsgroup for general Windows 2000 questions.

Heres what I would like to do.
I would like windows 2000 proffesional users to be able to access my
teamsites in the form of
\\SPSServer\sites\SiteName. This is kind of mandatory since certain office
macros require copying files to folders in the form of
\\SPSServer\sites\SiteName\Shared Documents.

Any ideas. The only lead i have right now is to somehow be able to install
the web client service on the requried client machines.

Accessing in the form of \\SPSServer\sites\SiteName with WSS comes only with
Office 2003.

So it's not the operating system that's the problem, it's the Office version
your people have.

(The SPS 2003 newsgroup is at microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver but
this answer ought to be valid for WSS sites within SPS 2003 as well as for
standalone WSS)

Mike I beg to differ.
Accessing a server in the form of \\SPSServer\sites\SiteName works on
Windows XP machines even without office installed. All that is required to
enable this feauture is the "Web Client" service. What the Web Client
service does is, it provides integrations with the Windows shell for the
WebDav protocol and hence WSS sites are emulated as Windows Shares.
If anyone else knows better than me on this, please feel free to correct me.

However I would be interested to know whether after intalling Office 2003 on
a Windows 2000 box whether a team site is accessible as in the form of
\\SPSServer\sites\SiteName.

Can you also use this Web Client with a standalone WSS site or is it
something restricted to SPS 2003 ? (if so ...)

My understanding (no more than that) was that with WSS the new ability that
wasn't in STS 1.0 to do Net Use and
\\WSSServer\DocLib was like so many things dependent on Office 2003 being
installed on the client.

But I am always happy to be corrected.

I don't have a Win 2K machine with Office 2003 installed to try this out,
I'm afraid.

Just tried out the scenario.
\\SPSServer\sites\SiteName does not work on Windows 2000 even with Office
2003.

To add my $.02US:

I was able to add a network place on a Windows 2000 SP3 machine. It does not
have any Office version installed. I added it using
http://WSS-ServerIP/Site/DocumentLibrary and I am now able to access the
files using Windows Explorer.

That is correct. Only WIndows XP and above CLients have WebClient Service
which allows you to access the WSS site as a UNC path. With WIndows 2000 you
can only use web folders to connect to it.

Comming back to my original question

Does anyone know of a way (a.k.a a hack) to install the WebClient service
on a Windows 2000 box?

The known facts about WebClient are
1. its a service
2. runs under svchost
3. has a couple of dependancies
4. any one know which dll it is?
