The SQL license agreement is a bit vague with respect to operating in the
back end... Should I deploy SPTS with an SQL backend, what are the CAL
requirements? None? One for the SPTS application? One per potential user
of the site?

Thanks,
Sean

There are no CAL requirements. On the Sharepoint Team Services Website,
there is a section that outlines the licensing...very straightforward.

Here is the info from the Microsoft site:
http://www.microsoft.com/frontpage/sharepoint/faq.htm

What are the licensing requirements for SharePoint Team Services?
Compared to many other Microsoft products and technologies, licensing for
SharePoint Team Services is unique: a.. For the Server: To deploy the
SharePoint Team Services team Web site solution, you need a license for
FrontPage 2002.
FrontPage 2002 is available as a standalone offering, and also ships
with Office XP Professional Special Edition and Office XP Developer.
b.. For the Client: There are no Client Access Licenses (CALs) for
SharePoint Team Services, whether installed on a corporate network or
available through a commercially hosted service. However, server
administrators should refer to their Microsoft Windows® and Microsoft SQL
ServerT licensing agreements for those components of a solution based on
SharePoint Team Services.

Additional notes: a.. If a user opens a SharePoint Team Services-based Web
site with FrontPage 2002, that desktop must have a license for FrontPage on
the client. Typically, about one out of nine SharePoint Team Services users
use FrontPage to open their team Web site.
b.. Commercial hosting is prohibited by the end user license
agreement (EULA) for SharePoint Team Services, unless you are a registered
Web Presence Provider (WPP) for FrontPage and SharePoint Team Services. WPPs
are granted an addendum that allows them to commercially host SharePoint
Team Services.

For example, an organization that offers SharePoint Team Services to 1,000
users will need one FrontPage 2002 license for the server and approximately
100 FrontPage licenses for users who want to customize their SharePoint Team
Services-based Web sites.

Stephen,

It's clear that there are no CALs required for Sharepoint, but what of SQL?
Are SQL CALs required to operate SPTS on an SQL backend?

From my understanding,

if you are using MSDE you don't need any license;

However if you are using SQL Server you have 2 options - either get CALs for
SQL Server or get a per processor based licensing.

Best Regards

i know i'm jumping in a bit late, but...
as i see it, the only "users" accessing the SQL backend is the Web Server
(IWAM_machine) or maybe SQLcmdExec, whoever HE is...
wonder if THEY each need a CAL?

As I understand it, normal SQL licensing is required...either server based
or CAL.
