Hello--

I was wondering, is it possible to mail enable a custom List? By default, i
think it's not available, but in some MS blogs I read that can be done too.
Anyone knows How?

May be the following will elaborate why I want to do so:

I want to have custom list that I can view with my Outlook, so that i
don't have to go to site all the time when Outlook is open. If that can be
done with any other ways please let me know.

Thanks -

Hi,
It's quite possible to email enable a custom list. Just make sure you get
your incoming email configuration right in your central admin and then look
into the list settings.

Actually, it's been my experience that you cannot email enable a custom
list. The reason for this is email requires email handlers, that is, it
requires programmatic bits on the backend that will allow SharePoint to get
an email for a list and parse the data in the header and put that data in
the correct fields. In pre-built lists, the fields are premade and
Microsoft could make the email handlers for them. However, with custom
lists, there is no way for MS to know what might be made, therefore, no
convenient handlers are there.

Jaxy, if configuring incoming email on your list is important, you might
want to consider looking at the existing list templates and see if there is
one close to what you want, then customize it to meet your needs.

That's what I thought. It's not easy to have a Custom List mail enabled.

SharePoint 3.0/2007 doesn't support custom list to receive emails. It only only supports enabling and configuring incoming email for next types of list

You can try Aura Emaibled Enabled List http://anurasoftware.com to enabled incoming email for Issue list, Task list, Custom list of SharePoint 2007 or SharePoint 3.0.

OOTB you can't do that as per following article:
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/sharepointserver/HA100823071033.aspx

However third party can be used to achieve this functionality provided you
are ready to maintain the additioan solution which is deployed to the Farm.

On the other side you can use the existing list templates and add content
types and add columns as per your requirement.

You can also deploy Application Templates for SharePoint which is a free
solution and contains some of the advanced list templates. It's available
for free.

We use http://www.cloud2050.com 's email solution to sync emails to SharePoint custom list in real time. It doesn't require any server side configuration and it supports Office 365.
