Not natively, since it is unlikely that any given user will have edit
permissions on any given document in the search results. If you do have
permissions, just go to the document library that holds that document (cut
the filename off of the URL) and you'll be able to check it out/edit it from
there.

Thanks for the response. However if a document library has 100’s of
documents, then the convenience of searching to find the documents is lost.
I see that searching from within the doc lib takes you to a results page too
that does not provide the ability to edit either.

And suggestions?

If you know what document library holds the documents you need to find, you
might try creating custom views that sort/filter based off of some criteria
you commonly use to narrow down the specific document you need.

Even better, if you have Office 2007, just attach the document library to
Outlook (let me know if you need the steps). That way you can search from
within Outlook, and you'll be able to open and edit the document directly
from within the Outlook search results.

My users (on an intranet) all want to use search to find spreadsheets and edit them directly from the search results.

It's crazy to do a search then have to copy & modify the URL of a result / navigate manually - just to be able to edit the spreadsheet! Crazy, stupid, dumb! At least Word 2010 allows you to Check Out a document (in the server bar). Excel doesn't have this feature.

Anyone else found a way around this with Excel 2007/2010?
