OK, I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here. I'm trying to create
a friendly url (http://intranet) for my sharepoint site (http://
sp.playground.com).

SharePoint server is Windows 2008 SP2 w/IIS 7

I've added an Internal URL under Alternate Access Mappings for "http://
intranet" on the Intranet Zone.

I've edited my Bindings in IIS with "intranet" on port 80.

I've reset IIS

Nothing. I can still browse to http://sp.playground.com but browsing
to http://intranet does not work. I get a "Cannot display the page"
error. This is browsing from the SharePoint server.

One other piece of informaiton... If I create a DNS CNAME for
"intranet" that points to sp.playground.com, and then attempt to hit
http://intranet, I receive an authentication box. However, it will not
accept my password.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try adding http://intranet to local intranet zone in the web browser
and see if it works. Also add the entry to the host file on the local
machine to see if it makes any difference. If you have created a
record in the DNS this should redirect the hits to the correct server
and the site should open up. Make sure you have also added intranet as
a host header in IIS.

hope this would help.
