I just wanted to get a definition of what we mean by "enumerating" in
SharePoint. For example, what does the following site permission mean?
1. "Enumerate permissions on the Web site, list, folder, document, or
list item."
In other words, what am I doing if I am enumerating permissions for a
document or a document library? and how am I doing it? am I using the
command prompt? does the result appear in the command prompt or in the
SharePoint list/folder?
Furthermore, what does the following site permission mean?
2. "Browse Directories - Enumerate files and folders in a Web site
using SharePoint Designer and Web DAV interfaces"
In other words, what information am I retrieving when I am enumerating
and how is the information being presented (i.e. does the information
present itself on the command prompt? or in the document library when
modified in SharePoint Designer?)
I am surprised that a Contributor is able to do this in SharePoint
designer, shouldnt this be only for the "Designers" in SharePoint?...
any examples of where/how a contributor would need this?
thanks, Maria
1 - Enumerate Permissions is a permission that allow a user the list the
available permissions for a given list of library. This is done by going in
the Settings of the list/doc library; there is a list that allows to list
the permissions of the list/doc lib. If the Enumerate Permission is not
given to a user, he/she should not be able to list the permissions.
2 - This permission is to deny/allow the use of Windows Explorer and
SharePoint Designer to view the content of a document library. Both tools
are in fact WebDAV clients and this is how they connect to SharePoint.
(WebDAV is an Internet protocol to work with files over a network).
