Currently, we use a public calendar in Exchange 2000 to allow staff to book places on internal staff development courses. This is done via our current ASP-based portal. Is it possible to replicate this in SPPS 2003?

Mark,

You could simply create an events list in an SPS area or WSS site, and give
staff the appropriate permissins to add/modify to this list.

I suspect that you are looking for something more than this though?

Edward,

Thanks for the reply. I was aware of the Events list but the reason for not using it is that there are quite a lot of events already in the Public Calendar and migrating these would be a nightmare (I imagine!).

One other limitation that's sprung to mind is that because I'm currently doing it programmatically using ASP/CDO, I'm able to add custom fields, which I have done. One of these is to store how many places are available on an event, another is who has booked a place.

I've got a bad feeling that replicating this would require a custom web service written in ASP.NET :(

I'm not aware of a way to get data from an Exchange calendar into a
SharePoint events list. Of course, If Outlook 2003, it partially works the
other way around if you are using Outlook 2003 (i.e. you can get a read-only
view of SharePoint event lists in Outlook). The ability to sync data between
the two is an often requested features, so maybe someday?

Regarding the latter question, you would be surprised at what you can
accomplish with the variety of fields that can simply be added through the
web-interface. You can do even more using FrontPage 2003 XSLT views. Your
latter requirement (i.e. who booked the place) sounds like it would be
pretty straight forward.

Try Ian Morrish's site at http://www.wssdemo.com/redir.aspx?url=28. He does
some great stuff, without actually needing to know how to program.

I would've thought with Microsoft's big push on collaboration that they would've got the Exchange <-> SharePoint integration sorted by now. Or are they leaving this for the next version, more cash ;)

May have to think about this one. Can you think of any easy way to transfer current events in an Exchange public calendar to a SP Events list?

I've never tried this myself, so I can't confirm whether it works or not...
Export the data from the Exchange Calendar to an Excel file then copy and
paste the data into your SharePoint Events list using datasheet view. If
your calendar is in the Exchange Public Store, you'll need to make a copy of
it in your personal folder in order to export it since Outlook can't
import/export from public folders.
