Hi,
When I open the document library in windows explorer / explorer view and
rename the document, it is changing the document name, but the same is not
shown under version history.

Also, though the document library requires check-out before changing, I am
not sure how I am able to rename the document in explorer without checking
out the document. Is this a bug?

Another point, any changes done to the file name on the web with proper
check-out, is not reflected in version history. Though it is saving as next
version, version history doesn't show the changes done to the file name.

Missing history creating confusion to the users and it is difficult to track
who did the changes.

Best regards,
Ramana

Simply, that is not how SharePoint works. Are you sure that Versioning
is turned on and that checkout is required?

Yes. Versioning is enabled and require checkout is set.

Gosh. Never ever saw problem you face. Sorry.

Do you mean this problem is specific to me (my settings / environment) and
not a general one?

I suspect that, but frankly haven't a clue. As I said, what you report
is basically not at all what I see and not at all how SharePoint is
designed to work.

Not sure if you resolved this, but regardless of metadata and views
and anything
else sharepoint does, at the end of the day, the filename is what
identifies an item
uniquely within a list. If you rename it, it is a different item (with
the new name), and is
not really the old item, which is why the version history does not
reflect your history as you
might expect.

Hi

Personally I would delete the Explorer View as a matter of course as it
allows just this sort of thing. It also encourages the creation of folders
which although is available kind of goes against the point of storing
documents in SharePoint with it's use of views and filters etc.
Also, I think (although not 100%) that as you are renaming the actual
document name (filename) and not an attribute (meta data) then it is not
captured as part of the version history.

Not sure if that helps at all,
Susan

Version history is there, but the name change is not reflected .
And my second question is that how it is allowing me to rename without
checking-out the document (required checkout is enabled on the document
library)

You are right that explorer behavior is not in-line with Sharepoint
behavior. Having said that, certain operations like drag and drop are not
allowed on sharepoint web. when users are familiar and comfirtable with
these features, they get annoyed to work with sharepoint due to extra steps
required to uplaod documents.
Ex: Think how to upload document that you have received in a mail.
With explorer: Just drag and drop
With Sharepoint: Save the document in temp folder and them upload to
sharepoint
OR
use save as and type the sharepoint folder path (You need to remember this
full URL).

If you want to store the new file under a new sub folder, then you cannot
directly save it from Outlook even though you remember the URL.
