Option to use the local SharePoint Drafts folder is not available on some
workstations. The workstations are using Office 2003 and attempting to check
out the same documents, some get prompted to save to the local drafts folder
and some don't get prompted.

tata, I think you'll find that the users that do receive the pop-up have a Office 2007 component of some sort installed, while the users who don't get the pop-up have a standard Office 2003 install. SharePoint Designer is a Office 2007 component that also is free to use.

I've been hoping to find somebody who knows what registry keys and .dll files are needed to make this change, I really don't want to install SharePoint Designer on all of the workstations. I'd rather roll out a .reg file and some .dll files in an installation script to add this functionality.

This is a setting in your Office application and not SharePoint. Not sure
where in 2003, but Word 2007 you can find it by selecting the Office button,
Word Options > Save > Offline editing options for document management server
files.

Thanks for that one, Dan - lifesaver!

Word/Excel 2010 is similar, Select File tab, Options, on the sidebar select
"Save", then look at "Save checked-out files to:" and select
"The server drafts location on this computer" and make sure the
"Server drafts location" points to "C:UsersMeDocumentsSharePoint
Drafts", where "Me" is your user name. Select OK and close
Word/Excel.

May have to try closing your SharePoint instance and re-launching/checking out
the file a couple of times, closing the browser, re-opening until it finally
sticks - happened like that with me. But should not require logging out or
reboot.
