I can't seem to upload ChemDraw files to my SharePoint site. When I attempt
to do so, I get the following error message:

An error occurred copying some or all of the selected files

Does anyone know if there is a way around this problem?

How big are the files and how does that compare with your upload limit ?

The upload limit is 50MB and the file I'm trying to upload is ~40KB. I think
it's specific to ChemDraw...

Go to SharePoint admin and ensure that your chemdraw extension is not listed
in the Blocked File Types!

Lets try disabling the antivirus and then check.

Thanks Girish! That worked! Now, is there a way to launch ChemDraw when the
.cdx file name is clicked just like Word opens when .doc file name is
clicked...?

Under Document Library Settings, under Advanced Settings there is an option
called Open in Client Window or Open as Web Page. Try the latter one and
check!

Thanks Girish, but that's not the desired behavior... Just like clicking a
.doc file name launches Word and opens the file in Word, I want to
automatically launch and open the file in ChemDraw by clicking a .cdx file
name. Is there a way to do that?

I noticed that if I use the "Explorer View", ChemDraw automatically launches
when I double click on the .cdx file icon. However, now matter what name I
give it, ChemDraw is unable to open the file, complaining "Sorry, that is not
a legal name for a file. Filenames cannot contain a ':', '/', or '\'." I'm
naming my files test.cdx and structure.cdx... I've contacted CambridgeSoft
support but received no response... If anybody has any suggestions, I'd
greatly appreciate it.

One more thing... It seems that the "All Documents View" and "Explorer View"
provide different features - "All Documents View" automatically refreshes
when a file is added, provides more options to ease the version control, etc
while "Explorer View" seems to handle different file types better. Is there
a way to consolidate these features into one view?

Dear T,

With regards to viewing CDX files directly, there is one option left which is
1) Open Windows Explorer
2) Tools on the menu Bar and then Folder Options
3) Go to the View File Types Bar and select CDX and see whats the
association. Incase that is given as IE, change to ChemDraw.

Next is open a Case with Chemdraw and ask them if they have an IFILTER for
SharePoint. Install the same and then try.

Regarding View -> just go to settings and Click Create View or you can go to
List or Doc Settings and scroll down to the last to change the view as per
your needs by checking what the existing settings of All Documents View &
Explorer View are. Then you can create your new view if you like and make
that the default.

Hope this resolves!

Thanks Girish,

Unfortunately, none of your suggestions resolved my issues. I guess what
I'm trying to find out is if there is any way to get SharePoint to treat
ChemDraw files as if it were a .doc or .xls file? All of the Microsoft
products work very nicely in SharePoint but non-Microsoft products such as
ChemDraw do not. In order to edit a .cdx file, for example, a user would
have to take 5 steps:

1. check out the file
2. download the file
3. edit the file
4. save the file to a local drive
5. go into SharePoint to upload the file

If it were a Microsoft product file such as .doc, a user can click the file
name to open the file (which automatically locks the file so other users
won't be able to make any changes), edit the file, then close the
application, which automatically uploads the latest file to SharePoint.

There is new way to handle chemical structures in SharePoint - Chem4SharePoint ( http://www.chem4sharepoint.com ), which lets you draw structures and edit chemical files right in SharePoint. More usefully all structures are structure-searchable.
